Startups are for Veterans | 10:00 - 11:30 AM
A popular misconception about military veterans is that because of their uniformed service they are rigid, regimented, and only know how to give or follow orders. While structure and order are hallmarks of the military, service members must be creative, inventive, risk-tolerant, team- & mission-oriented, and operate decisively in dynamic, ambiguous & time-constrained environments.  Sound familiar?

This panel will explore how military veterans are leveraging their gumption and discipline to build startups of scale & impact, and why they make both exceptional founders & early-stage employees.

Military veterans are underserved in many ways by entrepreneurial ecosystems, and we'd like to highlight some success stories and begin socializing the reasons that veterans are actually hard-wired to be extraordinary startup founders and early-stage company employees.

Our panelists will include a number of experienced founders and leaders from Austin's startup ecosystem (who also happen to be military veterans and/or PBC mentors/alumni).

This panel will discuss several topics, including:

  • The role their military service has played in their journey as entrepreneurs and startup employees

  • Military tools, processes & training they've applied directly to their companies

  • Stigmas and adversity they've faced moving from military service to industry

  • Reasons they deliberately seek out & hire veterans

  • Translating military experience to civilian/startup environments

  • Q&A from the audience

Austin Startup Week is supported in part by Capital FactoryTechstarsGalvanize, and Janik Vinnakota LLP. If you see someone from their teams, give them a hug and hi-five!

Veterans' Roundtable: Delivering More for Those Who Serve | 2:00 - 3:30 PM
Veterans are natural leaders but often lack knowledge about community resources and networks available to help them succeed as entrepreneurs. This session is designed to be an open forum for current and aspiring military/Veteran and spouse entrepreneurs to learn about local and national resources and programs to help them launch and grow companies, and to bring together entrepreneurs, community leaders, and supporters to discuss ways in which we can better serve and meet the needs of Veteran and military spouse entrepreneurs.
